Personal Transportation Vehicles: The Complete Buyer’s Guide

A personal transportation vehicle, or PTV, is best evaluated as a tool for a specific local route—not as a smaller substitute for every car trip. Before comparing colors and accessories, map where you will drive, who will ride, what you will carry, and where the vehicle will charge or be serviced.

Start with the route and vehicle class

The word PTV is commonly used in marketing and does not identify one universal legal category. A golf cart intended for private property is different from a federally classified low-speed vehicle (LSV), which has defined manufacturing and equipment requirements. State and local authorities decide registration, licensing, insurance, and permitted roads. Confirm the vehicle identification and certification documents with a dealer, then verify every planned public-road segment with current authorities and your insurer.

Match capacity to real life

Count regular passengers, child-restraint needs, groceries, tools, mobility equipment, and occasional cargo. Compare the manufacturer’s passenger and payload ratings with the total load, including accessories. A two-passenger model may be easier to park, while a four- or six-passenger model can reduce extra trips; neither is useful if its seating or storage does not fit your routine.

Compare power, range, and charging

Electric range varies with battery chemistry and age, temperature, terrain, speed, stop-and-go driving, tire pressure, passengers, cargo, and accessories. Add the day’s legs and leave a practical reserve rather than treating a published maximum as a promise. Ask what test conditions produced the figure, what outlet and circuit charging requires, and how long a typical recharge takes.

Inspect equipment, support, and ownership cost

Make a written shortlist

A good choice is legal for its intended roads, capable of the hardest regular route, comfortable for every routine passenger, and supportable after delivery. Put the vehicle class, specifications, included equipment, warranty, charging requirements, and promised work in writing. This makes an appealing golf cart or PTV easier to compare honestly.
